Église peinte du Menoux
Four hundred square metres painted by a Bolivian
A 19th-century neo-Gothic church, entirely covered in abstract frescoes by Jorge Carrasco, a Bolivian painter, between 1968 and 1976. Free, open every day.
Carrasco was born in La Paz. He taught at art school, exhibited alongside Picasso and Matisse, and took part in the Venice Biennale. He married Simone, a native of Le Menoux, and came to live here in the late 1960s. He died here in 2006, after almost forty years in the village.
He painted the church for free, over eight years. About four hundred square metres, walls and vaults, without a single centimetre left bare. The subject is his vision of the creation of man and the universe: sinuous forms, celestial bodies, saturated colours, inside a white stone building that never expected it.
It is a shock, and there is nothing equivalent in France at this scale in a rural church.
Open every day from nine to seven, all year round, free of charge. His studio-museum can also be visited, a few streets away, from April to December.
