L'Art de la Pierre
The workshop of a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, a short walk away
Didier Fauguet carves stone in Saint-Plantaire, our own commune. A Meilleur Ouvrier de France, he restores historic monuments and sculpts. His workshop is not open to the public.
He sat the Meilleur Ouvrier de France exam at twenty-seven. Since then, he has worked on historic monuments: Gothic musician angels for Metz Cathedral, Crozant-type crosses he can date at a glance, the two sculptures placed on the Cuzion Himalayan bridge for the passage of the Olympic flame.
His workshop is a shed in an industrial estate, with all the dust and noise that implies. Nothing there is staged for visitors. That is exactly what makes it worth seeing: you watch a man work, not a demonstration.
He welcomes anyone who wants to understand the work. We arrange a time with him, you go there, and he shows you what's on the bench that day. Wear closed shoes.
